Name the pet and the relationship
Use the pet's name and acknowledge what their companionship meant. Avoid it was only an animal, you can get another one, or comparisons that rank grief.
Offer one memory or practical kindness
Share a true detail you remember, offer a photograph, or help with food, transport, memorial arrangements, or remaining pet care. Do not ask for difficult medical details unless invited.
- Recognize the pet as an individual.
- Allow grief without a timeline.
- Remember the date if future check-ins are welcome.
Do not rush replacement or closure
A new pet is not a substitute for the one who died. Let the grieving person decide whether they want to talk, memorialize, adopt again, or simply receive a quiet message.
